Exercise Liability Waiver and Assumption of Risk

Version 2 · Updated

Please read this carefully

This waiver is between you and the owner(s) and representatives ("we," "us" and "our") of HeroWOD.com (the "site"). It affects your legal rights. You must accept it to create an account, and it applies every time you do a workout you found on the site, with or without an account.

Accounts are only for people 18 or older. Only people with a US phone number can create an account; anyone can browse the site.

Hero WODs are demanding

Hero WODs are named for people who gave their lives in service, and many are deliberately punishing. They can involve long runs, heavy lifting, weighted vests, high repetitions, gymnastics, rowing and time limits.

Exercise like this carries real risks, including:

  • muscle strains, sprains, dislocations and broken bones
  • overuse injuries and back injuries
  • dizziness, fainting, dehydration and heat illness
  • rhabdomyolysis, a serious breakdown of muscle tissue that can follow high-volume exercise
  • heart attack, stroke and, in rare cases, death
  • injuries from equipment, falls, traffic and weather when training outdoors

Check with a doctor first

Talk with a doctor before starting any new or more intense exercise, especially if you're pregnant, have a medical condition, take medication, have had an injury, or haven't trained recently.

Stop right away and get medical help if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, dizziness, unusual pain, or dark urine after a workout.

Scale every workout

You decide how to do each workout. Reduce the weight, repetitions, distance or pace so it fits your fitness and experience, and use the scaled variations where a workout offers them. Use proper equipment, train in a safe place, and get qualified coaching for movements you don't know well.

What the site is and isn't

Workouts are shown exactly as they were written, and their stories and instructions come from public sources and submissions. Nothing on the site is medical, fitness or nutrition advice, and we don't supervise anyone's training. Statistics, percentiles and streaks are for interest and motivation, not targets you should push yourself to meet.

If you work out with others, including members of a HeroWOD group, each person is responsible for their own safety. Group owners and admins aren't our staff or agents.

Assumption of risk

You do every workout voluntarily and at your own risk. You understand the risks described above, including risks that aren't listed or can't be foreseen, and you accept them.

Release of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, you release HeroWOD.com and its owners, staff and volunteers from any claim for injury, illness, death or property damage arising from any workout you do because of the site, or from your use of information on the site. This includes claims based on our ordinary negligence. It doesn't cover our gross negligence or willful misconduct, or anything else the law doesn't allow to be released.

This release binds you and, to the extent the law allows, your heirs and anyone who brings a claim on your behalf.

Other terms

This waiver is part of our Terms of Use, and the Terms' governing law section applies to it. If any part of this waiver can't be enforced, the rest still applies.

This waiver is versioned, and each new version says what changed. When a change needs your agreement, we'll ask you to accept it the next time you use the site while signed in.
