Why we tell these stories
HeroWOD.com honors first responders and military members who died in the line of duty. On every workout page, the hero's story comes first and the workout second. This page explains how we write those stories, how we use photos, how heroes and workouts are added, and how a family can ask us to remove a page.
Anyone can read hero and workout pages. Only people with a US phone number can create an account, which is needed to submit a hero or workout.
Who we honor
We honor first responders and military members who died in the line of duty, among them law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS personnel, and members of the military. Each hero has their own page with their name and rank or title, their category, the date they died, their story, and the workouts named for them.
Where stories come from
Our staff reviews every hero story from public sources, such as news reports, official memorials, department and military announcements, and information families have chosen to share. Stories submitted by members are checked against their sources before we publish them, and we may edit them.
We aim to be accurate and respectful, and we cite sources where we can. If you see a mistake, please tell us at support@herowod.com and we'll review it.
Photos and credits
Hero photos are shown with a credit and with a text description for people using screen readers. We use photos that their owners allow to be shared, or with permission. If you own a photo on the site and want it credited differently or taken down, see the copyright section of our Terms of Use.
Workouts
Each Hero WOD is named in honor of the person it remembers. Workouts are shown exactly as they were written, and some include scaled variations. A workout may honor more than one hero, and then each hero's story appears on its page.
Suggesting a hero or workout
Signed-in members can submit a hero and workout for us to consider. A submission needs at least one source, and a photo only if you have the right to share it, with its credit. Our staff review every submission and may edit, combine or decline it, and we email you when we approve or decline yours. We don't credit submitters publicly. Submitting gives us the rights described in our Terms of Use.
